From the books introduction:

The Port of Savannah is a study in diversity—from hosting the large container ships it’s known for to being home to the humble and disappearing shrimp boats that were once so plentiful along its waterways. Twenty years ago, when I began taking the first series of photos of the Port along the Savannah River, I didn’t know that they’d become the basis for a major photographic study. However, when I became a part-time and then full-time resident of the area, this seemed to be an obvious project to continue, given my long-term love of photographing boats and ships. This book is a compilation of photographs taken over these past 20 years and hopefully presents an overall image of the many facets of the commercial activities around the Port and the Savannah River. In getting to this point I have published numerous books that feature different segments of the entire Port. In addition, I completed a four-volume Workbook series in preparation for this one; Number Four is being produced in parallel with this “final” book. I use quotation marks because the Port is still evolving in fascinating ways, and my documentation of it could very well continue. The process of photographing the Port has been challenging in today’s world. Security has justifiably become paramount with regard to our transportation systems, particularly our international and domestic maritime trade. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of those who not only encouraged me in this project but also opened their doors to allow photographs to be taken of their work and surroundings. Their generosity has not been limited to allowing me access to properties, but has extended to my being able to board ships, ride tugboats on the Savannah River, and be aboard pilot boats traveling out into the Atlantic Ocean.
